In March, the national average wholesale price of 28 kinds of vegetables monitored by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs was 5.22 yuan per kilogram, down 11.4% from the previous month and 1.9% from the same period last year. In terms of varieties, the prices of 23 kinds of vegetables decreased month-on-month, and 5 kinds increased, among which spinach, cucumber, lettuce and green pepper were the ones with larger decline.

Zhang Jing, an associate researcher at the Institute of Agricultural Information, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said that in March, the national vegetable prices turned into a seasonal downward range. On the one hand, a large number of vegetables were listed in various places in spring, on the other hand, the production cost of vegetables in spring and the cost of trans-regional transportation decreased compared with winter.

Experts said that in March, most of the main vegetable producing areas had sufficient light and suitable moisture, which was conducive to vegetable production, and vegetable prices were expected to further decline in the later period.

Zhang Jing said that it should be noted that the vegetable market in spring and summer may be delayed in producing areas such as Hunan and Hubei that suffered from rain, snow and freezing weather in February, and the downward speed of vegetable prices in the later period is slower than in previous years.
